Angkak (Red yeast rice)

Angkak or Red yeast rice is an effective and well-tolerated lipid-lowering agent for individuals with nephrotic dyslipidemia. Monascus purpureus is a species of red colored mold that grows on rice. "Red yeast rice” contains significant amounts of the naturally occurring cholesterol-lowering drug lovastatin and therefore has lipid-lowering properties when consumed as a supplement or as part of the diet.
Red yeast rice has previously been shown to reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol to a similar extent to that achieved with simvastatin treatment.
